Aamir Khan Confirms ‘3 Idiots 2’, Story Set 10 Years Later

More than a decade after 3 Idiots became a cultural phenomenon, a sequel is finally in the works. Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is developing 3 Idiots 2, with the story set nearly 10 years after the events of the original film.

Speaking about the project, Aamir revealed that he has already heard the story and described it as “wonderful.” While the screenplay is still being refined, the core idea has impressed him.

In an interview with Amar Ujala, Aamir said that Rajkumar Hirani is currently working on the sequel and shaping the script. He added that the story carries the same charm and humour as the original, while taking the narrative forward by revisiting the lives of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju a decade later.

Aamir also expressed excitement about returning as the iconic Phunsukh Wangdu, a character that continues to resonate strongly with audiences even today.

A Timeless Classic Returns

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots starred R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan alongside Aamir. The film struck a chord for its take on India’s education system, friendship, and the pursuit of passion over societal pressure.

Over the years, its popularity has only grown, with fans frequently speculating about a sequel. With this confirmation, 3 Idiots 2 is now one of the most anticipated projects.

Other Projects

Apart from this, Aamir shared that his planned reunion with Rajkumar Hirani for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke has been put on hold due to script issues.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Aamir is in discussions to portray Ashneer Grover in a biopic, with Shraddha Kapoor being considered as the female lead. An official announcement is still awaited.

Currently, Aamir is also supporting his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming film Ek Din, which also stars Sai Pallavi and is set to release on May 1.
