Akshay Kumar says Bhooth Bangla is completely different from Bhool Bhulaiyaa, calls it a “real horror comedy”
Actor Akshay Kumar has addressed comparisons between his upcoming film Bhooth Bangla and his earlier hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa, stating that the two films belong to entirely different spaces.
According to a report by Mid-Day, the actor clarified that while Bhool Bhulaiyaa leaned more towards a psychological narrative, Bhooth Bangla explores a different tone within the horror-comedy genre.
He said that Bhool Bhulaiyaa was “more of a psychological comedy” rather than a conventional horror film, adding that the upcoming film ventures into a fantasy-driven space. He further noted that Bhooth Bangla is a “real horror comedy,” where the presence of an actual ghost becomes a key element of the story.
Directed by Priyadarshan, Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) featured a cast including Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja, and Ameesha Patel, along with Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav. The film was widely appreciated for blending humour with psychological suspense.
Priyadarshan, who also directs Bhooth Bangla, shared insights into his approach to the horror-comedy genre. According to Mid-Day, he explained that the inclusion of humour in tense situations helps audiences engage better with the narrative. He noted that viewers often look for moments of relief while watching horror films, making the combination of fear and comedy an effective storytelling tool.
He also added that while Bhool Bhulaiyaa was not initially conceived as a horror-comedy, humour naturally became an integral part of the film due to his preference for situational comedy.
The filmmaker further emphasised that striking the right balance between tension and humour can make the genre particularly appealing, provided it is executed effectively.
Bhooth Bangla marks another collaboration between Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan, who have previously worked together on films such as Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, and De Dana Dan.
The film also stars Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Jisshu Sengupta, Asrani, and Wamiqa Gabbi.
Presented by Balaji Motion Pictures in association with Cape of Good Films, the project is produced by Akshay Kumar, Shobha Kapoor, and Ektaa R Kapoor.
Bhooth Bangla is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 10, 2026.
