Deepika Padukone on Being Crowned a Global Indian: “Why Are We Copying Instead of Leading?”

Deepika Padukone, one of India’s most influential global ambassadors, believes that true global recognition begins with embracing one’s roots. The actress, who has taken Indian cinema and culture to international platforms from the Met Gala to the Oscars, from global film collaborations to entrepreneurial ventures emphasizes the importance of owning India’s heritage instead of altering it to suit Western expectations.

A Global Icon Who Celebrates Her Indian Identity

Over the years, Deepika has become a powerful global presence. With her confidence, versatility, and magnetic screen presence, she has redefined what it means to be a modern Indian star on the world stage. Representing India at prestigious global events, she has opened doors for countless Indian talents to be seen, heard, and respected internationally. Today, she proudly carries the title of a “Global Indian.”

Deepika on What Being a “Global Indian” Truly Means

In a recent interview, Deepika was asked what it means to be called a “global Indian.” She responded with clarity and conviction:

“It’s very simple to own our roots, our culture, our heritage. For the longest time, we as Indians have been influenced by the rest of the world. I always questioned that. Why are we copying what’s happening elsewhere instead of leading?”

She further explained that Indian talent should not have to change to fit someone else’s standards:

“I never understood why we need to dilute who we are to match someone else’s sensibility. If artists from other parts of the world are accepted globally, why can’t we stay authentic? It’s not something wrong with us it’s a lack of understanding on the other side. Being a ‘global Indian’ is about being proud of who we are and taking that confidently to the world.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Talent

When asked about her own accomplishments, Deepika expressed that her current focus is on uplifting others:

“What excites me now is empowering other talent. My team and I are working on enabling storytelling supporting creative minds, writers, directors, and even new producers. That’s what feels meaningful to me now.”
