Hindu Group Files Complaint Against Ranveer Singh for ‘Disrespecting’ Kantara’s Daiva; Demand Public Apology Ahead of Dhurandhar Release

Ranveer Singh has landed in controversy just days before the release of his upcoming film Dhurandhar, after a complaint was filed against him for allegedly mocking the sacred Daiva act depicted in Kantara: Chapter 1. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has accused the actor of insulting Goddess Chamundadevi during his appearance at the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

According to a PTI report, HJS claims that Ranveer "insulted Goddess Chamundadevi by describing the deity in a derogatory manner," sparking outrage among devotees and members of the Kotitulu community.

Complaint Filed at Panaji Police Station

Representatives of the organisation  Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye  submitted a detailed memorandum to sub-inspector Sahin Shetye at the Panaji police station. The complaint states that Ranveer mimicked the revered Daiva form from Kantara: Chapter 1 and referred to Chamundi Daiva as a “female ghost,” an act the organisation says has hurt religious sentiments.

The HJS has requested the registration of an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing deliberate insult and potential disturbance of public harmony.
“Chamundi Daiva is a sacred family deity of the Tulu community. Depicting the deity insultingly is unacceptable and may lead to public resentment,” the outfit said.

HJS Demands Apology, Code of Conduct for Events

In addition to urging a thorough police investigation, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has demanded:

  • A public apology from Ranveer Singh
  • An assurance that he will refrain from making similar remarks in the future
  • A strict code of conduct for IFFI and other cultural events to prevent the disrespect of religious sentiments

The group has also appealed to its followers to register their protest peacefully and lawfully. Ranveer Singh has not issued any public statement on the matter so far.

What Happened at IFFI?

During his stage interaction at the IFFI closing ceremony, Ranveer praised Rishab Shetty’s performance in Kantara: Chapter 1. However, he went on to imitate the Daiva act and referred to Chamundi Daiva as a “female ghost.”
In the widely circulated videos, Rishab Shetty can be seen warning Ranveer against mimicking the sacred form  a warning the actor did not heed. The moment quickly went viral, leading to intense criticism across social media.

More Trouble for Dhurandhar

This controversy comes at a sensitive time, as Ranveer’s Dhurandhar is set for release soon. The film is already entangled in another legal issue after the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma (Ashoka Chakra, posthumous) filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. They allege that the movie draws unauthorised inspiration from their son’s life without permission.
