A ‘GAME OF THRONES’ movie is in the works at Warner Bros.

“Game of Thrones” movie is in the works at Warner Bros., with Beau Willimon set to write the screenplay, according to TheWrap. That’s about all we know right now, and as with everything “Thrones” things could change, but the film is firmly in development.

Page Six first reported the news, suggesting the story could center on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary Targaryen conqueror who spawned a dynasty.

The Targaryens have long been central to HBO’s fantasy franchise. Game of Thrones chronicled Daenerys Targaryen’s rise to power, portrayed by Emilia Clarke. Prequel series House of the Dragon explores the height of Targaryen rule, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the early life of Aegon “Egg” Targaryen near the end of the family’s reign. All of these stories originate from the expansive literary universe created by George R. R. Martin.

Whether the film ultimately moves forward will depend on several factors. Not every project developed within the franchise makes it to production - HBO previously developed multiple spinoffs before greenlighting “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

Another key variable is corporate ownership. Paramount Global has reportedly won the bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, pending regulatory approval. David Ellison has indicated the deal could close this fall, well before the proposed “Thrones” movie would begin production. If the acquisition is finalized, the new leadership could either champion the project as a strategic expansion of the IP or decide against moving forward.

For now, what’s certain is that the film is in development and Willimon is attached as its writer.
