Karuppu North America Premieres Advance Booking Update: Poor Start.
Karuppu has wrapped up its USA premiere advance sales on a very low note ahead of tomorrow’s release. The Suriya starrer managed only $6,717 from 30 locations, covering 47 shows and 468 tickets sold for premieres. With Canada added, Total North America Premiere Advance Sales stand at $19K. Opening Day Advance Sales for North America are slightly better at $32K, but overall pre-release interest remains extremely poor. The distributor had gone limited, and the late premiere start time has further hurt walk-ins and final day pickups.
The USA numbers reflect minimal traction across circuits. With just 30 locations and 47 shows, the release scale itself is restricted, and the per-show average comes to $143 with 10 tickets per show. The 468 tickets sold for premieres indicate negligible urgency even in core Tamil diaspora hubs like New Jersey, Bay Area, and Dallas. The late night premiere slots, mostly post 10 PM local time, have made it difficult for family audiences and working crowds to turn up. The film needed a strong final day push, but bookings have remained flat over the last 48 hours.
At $19K for North America premieres, Karuppu is looking at one of the weakest starts for a Suriya film in recent years. The $32K total for Opening Day including premieres shows that day one sales are also muted, with limited growth expected from spot bookings. Trade notes that the lack of pre-release promotions in the USA, no star tours, and minimal social media buzz have contributed to the poor trend. The late start time for premieres has compounded the problem, as many shows are scheduled after 11 PM which traditionally see lower occupancy for Tamil films.
With premieres set for tomorrow, Karuppu is heading into release with very little momentum in North America. The $19K premiere total and $32K opening day advance put the film in a tough spot to recover its limited overseas costs. Unless there is exceptional word of mouth from early shows, the film will struggle to expand shows or locations over the weekend. For now, poor bookings and late start times have set Karuppu up for a soft opening in the USA and Canada markets.
