R Madhavan addresses ‘Dhurandhar 2’ controversy, says no smoke shown during Dasam Granth scene
Actor R Madhavan has issued a clarification regarding the controversy surrounding a scene in Dhurandhar 2, stating that there was no intention to disrespect the Sikh community.
The actor explained that the cigarette shown in the sequence was extinguished well before he recited lines from the Dasam Granth, and no smoke was visible on screen during the moment.
Madhavan issues video clarification
Taking to Instagram, R Madhavan shared a video message addressing concerns raised by some viewers. He thanked audiences for their support and acknowledged that certain sections were hurt by the scene.
He clarified that during filming, director Aditya Dhar had specifically instructed him to put out the cigarette well before delivering the lines. According to Madhavan, care was taken to ensure that neither smoke nor the cigarette appeared on screen while referencing the sacred text.
Emphasises respect for Sikh community
Madhavan reiterated his deep respect for the Sikh community, stating that the team had no intention of causing offence. He also mentioned that he personally visits the Golden Temple before the release of his films.
He added that if anyone was hurt, knowingly or unknowingly, he sincerely apologises and seeks understanding from the community.
Controversy and legal developments
The issue surfaced after objections were raised by members of the Sikh community over the depiction in the film. Gurjyot Singh Keer, associated with a Maharashtra-based Sikh organisation, alleged that the scene showed the actor smoking while reciting verses from the Dasam Granth, which was considered offensive.
Reports further suggest that a complaint has been filed against the filmmakers regarding the scene.
