Tanishaa Mukerji Reveals Extreme Transformation For Neal ’n’ Nikki Left Her With Hormonal Imbalance: ‘I Went Crazy To Achieve That Look’

Actor Tanishaa Mukerji has opened up about the intense physical transformation she underwent for the 2005 film Neal 'n' Nikki and the health consequences that followed. In a candid interview, the actor revealed that the pressure to achieve a toned body for the film eventually led to hormonal imbalance issues.

Tanishaa, daughter of veteran actor Tanuja and sister of Bollywood star Kajol, shared that producer Aditya Chopra had asked her to transform physically after an initial photoshoot for the film.

Speaking to Mamaraazzi, the actor recalled that she had already worked in a few projects when she was called for a screen test for Neal ’n’ Nikki. According to Tanishaa, Aditya Chopra had earlier advised her about career choices and fitness, but she had not paid attention at the time. However, things changed once she began working on the Yash Raj Films project.

“My first photo session for Neal ’n’ Nikki, I had all these love handles and he was like, ‘No, you can’t look like this. You need to be toned,’” she said.

The actor revealed that the remark pushed her into an intense fitness journey as she became determined to fit the image envisioned for the character Nikki.

“After that first photo session, I just went crazy and I transformed my body because I was so focused on reaching that ultimate goal and then he was like, ‘Yes, this is Nikki,’” she added.

However, Tanishaa admitted that maintaining such a strict routine eventually affected her health. The actor explained that after finding a specific balance between workout routines and dieting, she continued following it rigorously for a long period, which later resulted in hormonal complications.

“If you try to keep it, you would have a hormonal imbalance, which is what happened to me,” she said.

Directed by Arjun Sablok, Neal ’n’ Nikki starred Tanishaa opposite Uday Chopra and generated massive buzz at the time for its bold presentation and modern romantic storyline. However, the film received mixed-to-negative reactions upon release.

Reflecting on the criticism years later, Tanishaa said she chose to look at the audience’s response objectively instead of feeling hurt by it.

“Because I was like, ‘Why did the audience feel like this?’ I went back and I saw the film. I am very objective about myself,” she shared.

The actor also admitted that while she was satisfied with her work during that phase of her career, she now believes some scenes could have been performed differently.

“The audience has every right to criticise,” she stated.

Tanishaa further spoke about filmmaking as a collaborative medium and said actors can only perform within the boundaries set by directors.

“An actor will only push themselves as far as the director will allow them. An actor will only do what a director demands of them,” she explained, adding that filmmaking ultimately depends on how directors shape performances through camera work, lighting and storytelling choices.

More than two decades later, Neal ’n’ Nikki continues to remain one of the most talked-about films from the early 2000s  and Tanishaa’s latest revelations have once again brought attention to the pressures actors often face while trying to meet industry beauty standards.
