The Kerala Story 2's Release Put on Hold: Court Questions CBFC's Certification
The Kerala High Court has granted an interim stay on the release of "The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond", just a day before its scheduled premiere on February 27, 2026. The court questioned the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) decision to grant the film a UA certification, citing concerns over potential communal disharmony and distortion of public perception.
The petitioners, Sreedev Namboodiri and Freddy V. Francis, argued that the film's title and content could create a negative image of Kerala and incite violence. The court agreed, observing that the CBFC may have ignored guidelines while certifying the movie. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas directed the CBFC to re-examine the film within two weeks and consider the revision petitions filed by the petitioners.
The film's producers, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, are likely to face significant financial losses due to the stay. Theatre exhibitors are also panicking, as "The Kerala Story 2" was the only major release this week. The court's decision has sparked a debate on artistic freedom and the role of the CBFC in regulating film content.
The Kerala High Court's decision is a significant setback for the film's producers, and the outcome of the CBFC's re-examination will determine the film's future.
