Rajamouli's "Varanasi" Set to Hit Theaters on 7 April 2027, a Global Spectacle Awaits
SS Rajamouli, the visionary behind the Baahubali franchise and the worldwide hit RRR, has officially announced that his next magnum opus, Varanasi will arrive in cinemas worldwide on 7 April 2027. The film brings together two of India's biggest stars-Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas-alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran, promising a cross-continental adventure that blends myth, history, and high-octane action.
The story is described as a globetrotting action adventure that weaves a cosmic disaster-an asteroid striking the holy city of Varanasi with a time-traveling saviour who must traverse multiple eras and continents to avert a global catastrophe. Mahesh Babu plays Rudhra, a fierce explorer wielding a trident, while Priyanka Chopra takes on the role of Mandakini, a gun toting warrior in a yellow saree. Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays the antagonist Kumbha, adding a powerful foil to the narrative.
Production is massive in scale, with a budget reported around ₹1,000-₹1,300 crore (about US$120-150 million), making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. Filming began in February 2025 in Hyderabad, where a massive set replicating the ghats of Varanasi was built at Ramoji Film City. The movie is being shot in IMAX format, a first for an Indian non-English film, and features music by longtime Rajamouli collaborator M. M. Keeravani.
The official release date was confirmed via a new poster showing an asteroid hurtling toward Earth, a visual that has already sparked massive buzz on social media. The film will launch in standard and IMAX formats, with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and English, aiming for a truly pan-Indian and global audience. Fans are already counting down to April 2027, eager to see Rajamouli's next epic unfold on the big screen.
