Ajay Devgn’s Hint Points Toward an Expanded Unsung Warrior Series Exploring Other Maratha Warriors

Six years after Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior stormed cinemas and rewrote the rules for historical action films, Ajay Devgn has reignited excitement around the franchise with a single, powerful hint  and this time, the possibilities go far beyond a conventional sequel.

On January 10, marking six years since Tanhaji’s theatrical release, Ajay Devgn took to social media to share a striking collage inspired by the film. Accompanying the images was a line in Marathi that instantly caught attention:
“The fort has been captured, the lion is lost… but the story isn’t over yet.”
The post, tagged with #6YearsOfTanhaji, has sparked widespread speculation about the future of the Unsung Warrior banner.

While the ending of Tanhaji firmly established the martyrdom of Tanhaji Malusare, making a direct sequel narratively unlikely, Devgn’s words appear to hint at something broader  an expanded Unsung Warrior series that could explore the stories of other legendary Maratha commanders from the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior wasn’t just a box office success; it became a cultural moment. The film earned critical acclaim, massive audience support, and eventually fetched Ajay Devgn a National Award. More importantly, it opened a cinematic window into Maratha history that remains rich with untold stories, valor, and sacrifice.

Industry observers believe Devgn’s recent hint could signal the beginning of a thematic franchise, where each film focuses on a different unsung Maratha warrior  generals, fort commanders, and battlefield tacticians who played pivotal roles in establishing and defending the Maratha Empire. Figures such as Baji Prabhu Deshpande, Tanaji’s contemporaries, or other lesser-known commanders under Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership offer immense cinematic potential.

This approach would allow the franchise to retain its historical gravitas while introducing fresh narratives, characters, and conflicts  all united under the Unsung Warrior identity. It would also align with Ajay Devgn’s growing interest in large-scale, rooted storytelling, especially after the success of period and patriotic films in recent years.

Having also been creatively involved as a producer and writer on Tanhaji, Devgn remains uniquely positioned to shepherd such a universe forward. Whether the next chapter comes from the same creative team or introduces new storytellers, the foundation laid by Tanhaji ensures a ready and receptive audience.

For now, no official announcement has been made. But one thing is clear: the Unsung Warrior story isn’t ending  it may just be expanding. And if Ajay Devgn’s hint is anything to go by, Indian cinema could soon witness a powerful new historical franchise that celebrates the forgotten heroes who shaped history.
