Supreme Court Stays Out of Jana Nayagan Censor Case, Madras High Court to Decide Film’s Fate

The Supreme Court refuses to intervene in Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan censor controversy, leaving the release uncertain as the Madras High Court prepares to hear the case amid growing political debate.

The Supreme Court has chosen not to step into the release controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan, the much-awaited Tamil film starring Thalapathy Vijay. Instead, the apex court has asked the Madras High Court to take the final call on the matter by January 20, 2026, keeping the film’s release uncertain for now.

The issue began after the Madras High Court stayed an earlier order that had directed the Central Board of Film Certification to grant the film a U A certificate. This stay put the release plans on hold, forcing the producers, KVN Productions, to approach the Supreme Court for immediate relief.

A bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta heard the plea and noted that the case is already being examined by a division bench of the Madras High Court. Since the High Court has fixed January 20 for the next hearing, the Supreme Court said there was no need to interfere at this stage. The top court also made it clear that it would not comment on the merits of the censor dispute and advised the filmmakers to raise all arguments before the High Court.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the producers, argued that the delay was causing major losses, as film releases depend heavily on timing and promotions. However, the court maintained that the proper legal process must continue at the High Court level.

Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth and featuring Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj and Gautham Vasudev Menon, has been under intense public spotlight. The buzz is even stronger because the film is widely believed to be Vijay’s final movie before he fully steps into active politics.

While the CBFC examining committee had initially cleared the film after certain cuts were agreed upon, the matter took a turn when the board’s chairperson referred it to a revising committee following objections over some scenes. This move triggered the legal battle and stalled the release.

As the censor issue remains unresolved, many are openly questioning whether political pressure and party interests are playing a role behind the scenes. Social media debates continue to grow, with fans feeling that the delay goes beyond just certification concerns.

For now, audiences will have to wait longer for what could be the last big-screen appearance of Thalapathy Vijay. All eyes are on the Madras High Court’s decision next week, which will decide the fate of Jana Nayagan and its long-awaited release.
