Delhi HC Declines Stay on Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar Release; Directs CBFC to Consider Objections Raised by Major Mohit Sharma’s Family
Ranveer Singh’s highly anticipated film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, has landed in controversy just days before its scheduled release on December 5. The film has drawn objections from the parents of Late Major Mohit Sharma, Ashoka Chakra (posthumous) and Sena Medal awardee, who alleged that the movie takes unauthorized inspiration from their son’s life without consent.
According to a report by Mid-Day, the Delhi High Court has refused to stay the release of Dhurandhar. Instead, the court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to continue the certification process while carefully evaluating the concerns raised by Major Sharma’s family. Furthermore, the court stated that the CBFC may seek consultation from the Indian Army if required before granting approval.
Court Disposes Petition, Awaits CBFC Action
While disposing of the petition filed by Major Sharma’s parents, the court emphasized that their objections must be duly considered during the final certification stage. As of now, Dhurandhar’s release depends on CBFC clearance, making the board’s final decision crucial in determining whether the film proceeds without further controversy.
The Controversy
Following the trailer release, online discussions intensified, with many pointing out similarities between the film’s lead character played by Ranveer Singh, portrayed as being involved in covert military operations and the real-life heroic exploits of Major Mohit Sharma, who served in the 1 Para (Special Forces). Major Sharma was killed in action in Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, on March 21, 2009, and is remembered as a symbol of valor and strategic brilliance.
High Expectations Surrounding the Release
Despite the legal concerns, Dhurandhar remains among the most anticipated films of the year, thanks to Ranveer Singh’s dynamic portrayal and Aditya Dhar’s reputation following his successful directorial Uri: The Surgical Strike. The decision by Delhi HC not to stay the release offers temporary relief to the makers, but certification from CBFC remains the final critical step.
