Alpha Review: A Glossy Spy Thriller That Struggles to Find Its Emotional Core
Rating: ⭐⭐ (2/5)
With #Alpha, the #YRFSpyUniverse expands further, but unfortunately, not in a direction that fully capitalizes on its potential. The film is mounted on a grand scale, packed with stylish action sequences, international backdrops, and high-end production values - yet it struggles where it matters most: storytelling and emotional depth.
From the very beginning, Alpha presents itself as a slick, globe-trotting spy thriller. The visuals are polished, the action choreography is well-executed in parts, and the film undeniably carries the signature YRF flair. However, beneath the surface-level spectacle, the narrative feels uneven and emotionally distant, never quite building the weight required for a film of this scale.
A major drawback lies in its writing. The screenplay prioritizes style over substance, moving from one set-piece to another without consistently grounding the stakes. While the concept has promise, the execution feels fragmented, and the emotional arcs never fully land. The film attempts to balance patriotism, personal conflict, and espionage, but ends up diluting all three.
Director Shiv Rawail shows ambition in crafting a larger-than-life spy universe entry, but the treatment leans heavily towards a Westernized action aesthetic. This approach, while visually appealing, reduces the cultural and emotional relatability that earlier films in the universe managed to establish more effectively.
In terms of performances, Alia Bhatt puts in an earnest effort but appears miscast in a role that demands a stronger physical and emotional conviction. Sharvari, despite having potential, is significantly underwritten and does not get enough narrative space to make an impact. Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol deliver dependable performances, but their characters remain confined within a predictable framework.
The much-talked-about cameo also fails to deliver the intended impact, feeling more like a forced inclusion rather than a meaningful narrative addition. Instead of elevating the story, it briefly disrupts its flow.
Final Verdict
#Alpha is a film that shines in execution but falters in essence. It has scale, style, and star power - yet lacks the emotional backbone needed to make it memorable. As a result, it stands as one of the weaker entries in the #YRFSpyUniverse, more impressive visually than narratively.
