Karan Johar Breaks Silence on Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham Sequel Rumours: “I Would Never Make K3G 2”

Filmmaker Karan Johar has finally addressed ongoing speculation surrounding a sequel to his iconic 2001 film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Putting rumours to rest, the director confirmed that there are no plans for K3G 2, nor any immediate revival of his ambitious period drama Takht.

Speaking on On Call with Sonal Kalra for The Right Angle, Johar clarified that he has no intention of revisiting the beloved family drama.

“I Would Never Tamper With That Nostalgia”

Reflecting on the film’s legacy, Johar admitted that while Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham may not have been perfect, its emotional impact and nostalgia are unmatched.

“Every film has its flaws, but what K3G has in abundance is nostalgia. Generations have grown up watching that film… I would never tamper with that love because you’re setting yourself up for disaster when you make something like K3G 2.”

Released in 2001, the film featured an ensemble cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, and Hrithik Roshan, and continues to remain a cultural landmark in Indian cinema.

No Revival of Takht - For Now

Johar also addressed speculation about Takht, confirming that the film is currently not being revived, though it remains close to his heart.

“There is no revival of Takht currently on the cards. But it is a film I will definitely make… I consider it one of the strongest screenplays of my career.”

The historical drama, written by Sumit Roy, was announced in 2021 and featured a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and Bhumi Pednekar. However, the project faced delays due to the pandemic and remains on hold.

A Legacy That Stands Untouched

With this clarification, Karan Johar has made his stance clear — Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham will remain untouched, preserved in the nostalgia that has made it one of Bollywood’s most loved films.

While fans may have hoped for a sequel, the filmmaker believes some stories are best left as they are — timeless and complete.
