Yogi Adityanath criticises films glorifying criminals, urges filmmakers to focus on inspiring content
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday criticised a section of Indian cinema for portraying criminals and villains in a heroic light, saying such depictions have adversely influenced generations.
Addressing a cultural event in Varanasi based on the life of Emperor Vikramaditya, Adityanath said that cinema plays a significant role in shaping societal values and public perception.
“There was a time when noble characters were portrayed as villains and villains were projected as heroes through films. What was the result? Generations were getting spoiled,” he said. He added that such portrayals weaken society’s ability to stand against injustice, oppression and exploitation.
The Chief Minister urged filmmakers to exercise responsibility in storytelling and create content that positively influences the younger generation. “If you present a dacoit as a hero, the youth will start considering that dacoit as their role model. Never portray a dacoit as a hero,” he said.
Adityanath also noted that Indian cinema has historically contributed positively when it reflected the country’s cultural and moral ideals, but cautioned that contemporary content must remain mindful of its impact.
The remarks come amid ongoing debates around the portrayal of anti-heroes in cinema. Films such as Bandit Queen, Paan Singh Tomar and Sonchiriya have depicted dacoits and criminals in complex, sometimes sympathetic narratives. While critics argue this risks glorification, filmmakers maintain that such portrayals aim to explore human complexity rather than endorse crime.
Adityanath was accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav at the event.
