Case Filed Against Dhurandhar Star Ranveer Singh in Bengaluru Over Alleged Mimicking of Daiva Tradition
Bengaluru: An FIR has been registered against actor Ranveer Singh at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru, following allegations that he insulted Hindu religious sentiments and the revered Chavundi Daiva tradition of coastal Karnataka.
According to the complaint, the case has been booked under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint was filed by Prashanth Methal (46), a Bengaluru-based advocate.
As per the FIR, the alleged incident took place during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa on November 28, 2025. The complainant has alleged that Ranveer Singh made derogatory remarks and performed a stage act that mocked and demeaned sacred elements of the Daiva tradition, particularly scenes associated with Kantara-style rituals.
The FIR states that the complainant came across a video clip of the performance on December 2, 2025, while browsing Instagram at the Karnataka State Billiards Association in Bengaluru. The video was reportedly shared by an account named Brief Chaat.
In his complaint, Methal alleged that the actor imitated expressions linked to Panjurli and Guliga Daiva in what he described as a crude and comical manner. He further claimed that Ranveer Singh referred to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost,” which he alleged amounted to a grave misrepresentation of a deity deeply revered by devotees.
The complaint emphasises that Chavundi Daiva symbolises divine feminine energy and serves as a guardian deity in coastal Karnataka. Portraying the deity as a ghost, the complainant stated, hurt religious sentiments and caused significant mental anguish to followers of the tradition.
The FIR further alleges that the act was deliberate and carried out with malicious intent to outrage religious feelings and promote enmity within society.
A private complaint was initially filed on December 27, 2025, before the Additional Judicial Magistrate in Bengaluru. On January 23, 2026, the court directed the High Grounds Police Station to register an FIR under Section 175(3) of the BNS, following which the case was officially registered.
The matter has now been referred to the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court, Bengaluru, and is scheduled for hearing on April 8, 2026.
