Shraddha Kapoor's Eetha Lands in Title Controversy as Vithabai Narayangaonkar's Family Seeks Name Change
Shraddha Kapoor's upcoming biographical drama Eetha has found itself at the centre of a controversy weeks before its theatrical release. While the film's teaser received widespread appreciation for Shraddha's transformation into legendary Lavani artiste Vithabai Narayangaonkar, the title of the film has now drawn objections from the late performer's family.
According to reports, Vithabai Narayangaonkar's sons, Kailash and Rajesh, along with her grandson Mohit, have urged the makers to reconsider the title. The family believes that a biopic celebrating the life and legacy of one of Maharashtra's most iconic folk artistes should carry her name instead of Eetha. They have reportedly requested the makers to rename the film in a way that directly honours Vithabai's contribution to Lavani and Tamasha.
The demand has also received support from members of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), who have questioned why the biopic was not named after the legendary performer herself. They argue that using Vithabai's name would better preserve and celebrate her cultural legacy.
Despite the growing debate, neither director Laxman Utekar, actress Shraddha Kapoor nor the makers at Maddock Films have issued an official statement regarding the controversy.
The teaser of Eetha had generated significant buzz after showcasing Shraddha Kapoor's striking transformation into Vithabai Narayangaonkar. The film traces the extraordinary journey of the celebrated Lavani icon, highlighting her resilience, dedication to her art, and the challenges she overcame to become one of Maharashtra's most revered folk performers.
With less than a month remaining before release, it remains to be seen whether the makers will respond to the family's request or retain the existing title. For now, the discussion surrounding the film has shifted from its acclaimed teaser to the growing debate over how best to honour the legacy of the legendary artiste.
